Curriculum Offer for ‘My Thinking’

At The Meadows, our aim is to provide a curriculum that accommodates and supports the needs of our students so that they have the basic functional skills to be able to participate in the wider community and be prepared for adult life.

This bubble includes elements of Numeracy (Maths) and Science.

Pre-Formal: For more information about our Pre-Formal Curriculum Pathway, please click here.

Semi Formal:

Key Stage 3

The semi-formal pathway in Key stage 3 will include discrete Numeracy lessons.  Students are exposed to a daily diet of activities that will cover the following areas of Numeracy: Number, Geometry, Addition and Measure, selected according to individual need. Students following this pathway will also have discrete science lessons, which will cover the following areas of Science: Materials, Physical processes and life processes.

Key Stage 4

In Key stage 4, Numeracy is delivered through termly and continuous units of work from WJEC.

These are the continuous units taught across the years 10 and 11:

  • Developing number skills
  • Developing ICT skills
  • Developing learning skills

Other areas of maths are revisited in termly units covering taught across years 10 and 11:

  • Early Mathematics Shape
  • Early mathematics: measure, weight and capacity
  • Developing Measure: time
  • Early mathematics sequencing and sorting
  • Early mathematics measure: Money
  • Early mathematics: position

Students following this pathway will also have discrete science lessons, which will revisit the following areas of Science: Materials, Physical processes and life processes.

Key Stage 5

In Key Stage 5, students work towards accreditation in ASDAN Life Skills Challenge at WTE1 and E1All students have termly My Thinking Modules to focus and develop key skills in My Thinking including functional use number through money, time and projects.   To help support the consistent delivery of skills. Students will have the opportunity to apply skills across all bubble areas applying what they understand to different topics.

Science is taught through the following units of work:

  • LSC unit Gardening activities
  • LSC unit Science indoors/outdoors
  • LSC unit Healthy Eating

And through Medium term plans developed by curriculum lead for science these are delivered across the 3 years.

  • Container gardening
  • Science Investigation
  • Health Action Plan

Formal:

Key Stage 3

The formal pathway in Key stage 3 for Numeracy will include students completing units of work covering the following four areas Geometry, Number and place value, Number and Operations and Measure.  Additionally, students following this pathway will also have discrete science lessons, which will cover the following areas of

Science: Materials, Physical processes and life processes.

Key Stage 4

In Key stage 4, Numeracy is delivered through termly and continuous units of work from WJEC.

These are the continuous units taught across the years 10 and 11:

  • Working with whole numbers

Other areas of maths are revisited in termly units covering taught across years 10 and 11:

  • Working with 2D and 3D shapes
  • Working with Measure (time)
  • Working with Measure
  • Data handling
  • Using Money
  • Working with angles and position

Students following this pathway will also have discrete science lessons and work towards an accreditation in science from WJEC and will revisit build upon their knowledge and understanding of science through these units:

  • The science of light and sound (physical processes)
  • Food and Health (Life Processes)
  • Variation and Adaptation (Life Processes)
  • Making useful compounds  (Materials)

Key Stage 5

Students in Key Stage 5, work towards accreditation in ASDAN Life Skills Challenge at Entry 2 and Entry 3.

All students have termly My Thinking Modules to focus and develop key skills in My Thinking including functional use number through money, time and projects. PSD at Entry 2 and Entry 3 also support the functional maths across bubble areas and across the academic year.

In addition to this, the students will work towards the following accredited science units throughout key stage 5:

  • LSC- Gardening activities
  • LSC- Science indoors/outdoors /
  • PSD- Environmental Awareness
  • LSC- Healthy Eating

Additionally, some of the science content delivered in key stage 5 will be delivered through non accredited units of work written by The Meadows School.

Students will have the opportunity to apply skills across all bubble areas applying what they understand to different topics giving them repetition, consolidation and development over time

All science is covered within the PSD environmental awareness unit of work.
